Garage Insulation in Florida: Is It Worth It?

Step into most Florida garages on a summer afternoon and it feels like an oven. That heat doesn’t stay in the garage. It moves into the rooms next to it and above it, and your AC has to deal with it. Insulating the garage won’t turn it into a cool room, but it can make the rest of your home a lot more comfortable.

Why Florida garages get so hot

Garages usually aren’t insulated, aren’t air-conditioned, and have a big door that soaks up sun all day. Many also have the attic right above them with little or no insulation over the garage ceiling. All that heat builds up and pushes into the house through shared walls and the ceiling.

When garage insulation makes the most sense

  • You have a bedroom or bonus room over the garage
  • A bedroom, kitchen or laundry room shares a wall with the garage
  • You use the garage as a workshop or gym
  • The room next to the garage is always hotter than the rest

What gets insulated

The garage ceiling. If there’s a room above, this is the most important spot. Batts fit well between open ceiling joists, and if the ceiling is finished, blown-in may work from the attic side.

Shared walls. The wall between the garage and the house is where a lot of heat moves. If it’s open, batts can be fitted snug in every bay.

What about the garage door?

The door is a big source of heat, but it’s a separate project. Insulated doors or door insulation kits are usually handled by a garage door company. Insulating the ceiling and shared walls is often where homeowners notice the biggest change inside the house.

Common questions

Will insulating my garage make it cool? No. It will still be warm. The goal is to keep that heat out of the rest of your house.

Should I do the garage or the attic first? If your main attic is thin, start there. It affects every room. Then the garage.

How long does it take? Most garage jobs take a few hours to a day.
