New AC or New Insulation: Which Should Come First?

Outdoor AC condenser beside a Florida stucco home

When a Florida home won’t stay cool, most people blame the AC first. Sometimes that’s right. But a lot of the time, the AC is working hard because the attic is letting heat pour into the house. Replacing a working AC won’t fix that.

How your attic and AC work together

Your AC removes heat from the house. Your attic insulation slows down how fast new heat gets in from the roof. If the insulation is thin or patchy, heat keeps flooding in, and the AC has to run longer to keep up. Our post on how attic insulation affects your HVAC system goes deeper on this.

When the AC is probably the problem

  • It’s blowing warm air even early in the day
  • It’s making new or loud noises
  • It’s leaking water or freezing up
  • It’s old and has needed a lot of repairs
  • An HVAC tech has told you it’s failing

In these cases, call an HVAC company. Insulation won’t fix a broken AC.

When the attic is probably the problem

  • The AC runs fine in the morning but can’t keep up in the afternoon
  • Upstairs or certain rooms are much hotter than others
  • Ceilings feel warm to the touch on hot days
  • You can see the tops of the joists in your attic
  • Your bills went up but the AC checks out fine

Our post on why your AC runs constantly covers these signs in more detail.

Why it often makes sense to do insulation first

If you need a new AC anyway, fixing the attic first can help. When less heat gets into the house, your HVAC company may be able to size the new system for the home you’ll actually have, not the one leaking heat. And if your current AC is still working, better insulation may help it keep up without a replacement. Every home is different, so it’s worth getting both looked at.

Don’t forget the ducts

In most Florida homes, the AC ducts run through the attic. Leaky or poorly covered ducts lose cool air before it reaches your rooms. See our post on duct sealing and insulation for what to look for.

Questions to ask your HVAC company

  • Is my current system working the way it should?
  • Are my ducts leaking or poorly insulated?
  • Would better attic insulation change the size of system I need?
  • Is my system the right size for my home now?

Common questions

Will new insulation fix a broken AC? No. If the AC is failing, it needs repair or replacement. Insulation helps a working AC keep up.

Can I do both at the same time? Yes. Many homeowners do the attic first and schedule the AC right after, so the new system is sized for the improved home.

How fast will I notice a difference after insulation? Most people notice rooms holding temperature better within the first few hot afternoons.
