What Affects the Cost of an Attic Insulation Job?

Gloved hand holding a laser measurer at an attic hatch

Attic insulation isn’t priced like a product on a shelf. Two homes on the same street can get very different quotes, and that’s usually for good reason. Here’s what actually moves the price, so you can tell if a quote makes sense.

The size of the attic

The biggest factor is square footage. More attic floor means more material and more time. That’s why a contractor should measure your attic, not just guess from the size of your house.

How deep you’re going

Going from a few inches to a deep layer takes more material than a light top-off. The target depth depends on the R-value you’re aiming for. Our post on what R-value a Florida attic needs explains the numbers.

Whether old insulation has to come out

If your current insulation is dry and clean, we can usually blow new insulation on top. If it’s wet, moldy or full of pest mess, it needs to be removed first. Removal adds labor, equipment and disposal, so it’s one of the biggest swings in price. See our removal and replacement page for how that works.

How easy the attic is to work in

  • Low roof pitch and tight spaces take longer
  • Lots of ductwork, wires and framing to work around adds time
  • A small or hard-to-reach hatch can slow things down
  • Multi-level homes or bonus rooms may have several separate attic areas

Extra work that makes it last

Some jobs include sealing air leaks around lights, pipes and wires before the new insulation goes in, adding baffles at the soffits so vents stay clear, or adding a radiant barrier. These cost a bit more but can make a real difference.

What a fair estimate should include

  • The square footage of the attic
  • The type of insulation and the target R-value or depth
  • Whether old insulation is being removed
  • Any air sealing, baffles or other extras
  • Cleanup

Be careful with phone quotes. Nobody can price an attic well without seeing it. For a look at long-term savings, see our post on insulation cost and payback.

Ways to keep the cost down

  • If your old insulation is dry and clean, a top-off usually costs less than full removal
  • Clear a path to the attic hatch and move stored items before install day
  • Fix roof leaks first so you don’t pay for insulation twice
  • Ask about any current offers. We sometimes run promotions like our free garage insulation offer

Common questions

Why won’t you quote over the phone? Because we’d be guessing. Attic size, current depth and condition all change the price, and we’d rather give you a real number once.

Is the cheapest quote the best deal? Not always. Check that every quote covers the same square footage, depth and removal. Our post on how to choose an insulation contractor has a list of what to compare.

Do you charge for the inspection? No. The attic check and estimate are free.
