Settled or Uneven Attic Insulation: How to Fix It

Uneven attic insulation with deep piles and bare joists

Insulation doesn’t have to be old or damaged to stop working well. Sometimes it just isn’t where it should be anymore. Over the years it settles, gets kicked around, and leaves low spots and bare patches. Heat finds those spots fast.

Why insulation ends up uneven

  • Settling. Loose-fill insulation slowly packs down under its own weight.
  • Foot traffic. AC techs, cable installers and electricians walk through it and push it aside.
  • Repairs. When ducts, wires or lights get worked on, the insulation around them often never gets put back.
  • Wind. Air moving in from soffit vents can blow loose insulation away from the edges of the attic.
  • Pests. Rodents tunnel through it and pile it up for nests.

Why bare spots matter so much

A small bare spot can let in more heat than you’d think. Heat always takes the easiest path, so a patch of uncovered drywall acts like a hole in the blanket. That’s often why one room feels hotter than the rest, even though the attic looks mostly covered from the hatch.

How to check your own attic

From the hatch, look for:

  • The tops of joists showing above the insulation
  • Bare drywall, especially around the AC unit, the hatch and the edges
  • Areas that look much lower than others

If you see wood joists sticking up, you have less than the height of those joists, which in many homes is only a few inches.

How we fix it

We start by checking the depth across the whole attic, not just near the hatch. Then we blow in new insulation to fill the low spots and bring the entire floor up to an even depth. We keep it clear of soffit vents and away from anything that needs space, like certain light fixtures. You can see how it works on our attic blown-in insulation page.

Top-off or full removal?

If the old insulation is dry and clean, a top-off is usually all you need. If it’s wet, moldy or full of pest mess, it should come out first. We’ll tell you which one your attic needs. For a full list of warning signs, see our post on the top signs you need new attic insulation.

The spots we find bare most often

  • Around the AC air handler and the walkway to it
  • Right next to the attic hatch, where people climb in and out
  • Along the edges of the attic near the soffits
  • Over closets and hallways nobody checks
  • Around ceiling fans, lights and bath fans that have been replaced

These are also the spots most homeowners can’t see from the hatch, which is why we check across the whole attic before we quote anything.

Common questions

Can I rake it level myself? You can move some insulation around if you can do it safely from the joists, but raking doesn’t add any depth. If the whole attic is thin, it still needs more.

How long does a top-off take? Most single-story homes are done in a few hours to a day.

Will new insulation settle too? Loose-fill does settle a little. Installers account for that by blowing to the depth listed on the bag for your target R-value.
