How do I know if my attic needs more insulation?
Look from the hatch with a flashlight. If you can see the tops of the joists, or there are bare spots, you probably need more. Hot upstairs rooms and an AC that can’t keep up in the afternoon are other clues. Our post on the top signs you need new attic insulation covers the rest.
How much insulation should I have?
For our climate zone, ENERGY STAR suggests R-49 for an attic with no insulation, or adding about R-38 if you already have 3 to 4 inches. See what R-value a Florida attic needs for more.
Do you have to remove my old insulation?
Only if it needs it. If it’s dry and clean, we can usually blow new insulation on top. If it’s wet, moldy or full of pest mess, it should come out first.
Blown-in or batts?
For most attic floors, blown-in covers better because it fills every gap and corner. Batts are great for open walls and garage ceilings. Our blown-in vs batt post compares them.
How long does the job take?
Most single-story homes are done in one day. Removal jobs and larger homes can take a little longer.
Is it messy?
Not for you. We protect your floors, run hoses from outside, and clean up before we leave.
Will it lower my power bill?
Many homeowners see lower cooling bills after adding insulation, but every home is different. It depends on how much you have now, your roof, your AC and how you use it.
